A PvE server in DayZ is a community server whose rules, and usually its mods, stop survivors from attacking each other across most or all of the map, so the danger comes from the infected, wildlife and the weather. The quickest way to find a busy one on PC is to search “pve” on BattleMetrics, sort by players, skip anything ranked “NR”, and join through the official DayZ Launcher or the DZSA Launcher, since both can handle Workshop mods. In the snapshot further down, taken on October 31, 2026, the busiest ranked server with PvE in its name held 111 players in 121 slots.
What makes a DayZ server PvE
Official servers and community servers
Out of the box, DayZ is a sandbox in which the next survivor you meet may help you or rob you; its Steam store page tags the game with PvP and leaves the friend-or-foe decision to each player. Bohemia Interactive, the developer, runs official servers for that standard game and keeps them apart from community servers. Since update 1.26 in 2024, a verification step keeps the official tab of the Steam version limited to Bohemia’s own servers.
PvE play therefore happens on community servers, which players and groups host and configure themselves. BattleMetrics marks every server in the snapshot below “Official Server: False”.
Modded and vanilla servers
Bohemia supports modding on PC only. Its FAQ says modding will not come to any console build, and that covers the PC Game Pass edition too, since that edition runs DayZ’s Xbox build on Windows. On Steam, mods come from the Steam Workshop, and the store page says players can manage both mods and community servers from the game’s launcher.
A server can stay vanilla and still lean toward PvE through settings. Bohemia’s server configuration reference documents one switch that protects base-building fences and watchtowers from damage and another that protects tents, barrels, wooden crates and sea chests. Neither that page nor Bohemia’s gameplay settings reference lists an option that turns off damage between players. A server that needs no mods can still change the game through its mission file or through server-side mods, which the configuration page says are not sent to players, so read its posted rules to learn how it handles attacks between players.
How PvE rules are enforced
The first layer is the written rule set. A server’s owner can write a blurb of up to 255 characters for the in-game browser to display, and since update 1.26 that text appears in the server details panel on PC and on console.
The second layer is mods. PVEZ, a mod built for PvE and mixed PvPvE servers, lets admins mark areas as PvE or PvP zones, give back health that one player takes from another inside a PvE zone or reflect the damage onto the attacker, and tag anyone who kills inside a PvE zone as a “lawbreaker” who loses that protection. It can run the whole map as PvE or as PvP, or mix the two with zones of either type. PVEZ Reloaded, an updated version that receives bug fixes, also cures a long-standing one-hit-kill bug in PvE zones; two servers in the snapshot load it.
Safe zones are the third tool. DayZ-Expansion-Core, the base of the Expansion mod family, lists safe zones among its features, and the TraderPlus trading mod adds safe zones where the infected leave players alone and actions such as injections are blocked. Four of the 11 servers in the snapshot run Expansion-Core, and four run TraderPlus.
A PvE label does not always cover the whole map. HORIZON, in the snapshot, describes itself as PvE with PvP zones.
How to find PvE servers on PC
The in-game browser and the DayZ Launcher
Because the official tab on Steam holds only verified Bohemia servers, PvE servers sit with the community servers. The community-run DayZ Wiki notes that the browser’s filter panel includes a name search, so typing “PvE” there is the simplest first pass. Updates since 2023 have added true player totals in place of masked ones (1.22), queue status and each server’s time of day (1.23), and a map column with new filters (1.26). Open a server’s details and read its description before joining. For a modded server found somewhere else, the PC launcher’s direct connect window gets you in and can keep it in your favorites.
DZSA Launcher
DZSA Launcher is an unofficial Windows launcher for DayZ with its own mod support, and its site says it has no affiliation with Bohemia and no authorization from it. After a DayZ patch, restart the launcher before trusting the version it shows for a server, because it reads the list only at startup. When a server needs mods you lack, it offers to fix them through Steam; its support page says Steam must be online and signed in to an account that owns DayZ. Treat the top of its list as advertising rather than a popularity ranking: sponsors pay for those six places, can display a different name there, and the launcher rotates them at random, favoring whoever paid more.
BattleMetrics
BattleMetrics keeps a searchable list of DayZ servers. Search for “pve”, sort by players, and narrow the results with filters for player count, distance, country, modded or not, specific mods, official status, password and third-person view. Rank comes from total play time on a server across the last week, refreshed each day at 01:00 UTC, so it reflects a server’s pull better than one player count does. Skip anything ranked “NR”. BattleMetrics advises avoiding such servers and hides them from its default list, though a keyword search such as “pve” can still turn them up; the label means it suspects the player count is run up by bots or otherwise padded. Each server page shows the mod list, uptime, game version and player-count charts for 24 hours, seven days and longer, but not who is online, since DayZ gives BattleMetrics no player lists.
Discord
Look for the invite in the listing itself. The sample server description in Bohemia’s configuration reference ends with a Discord line, the MAG servers’ DZSA listing name ends with a Discord invite, and a sponsored DZSA listing can add an info button with links. Before committing to a server, it is worth joining its Discord, if it has one, to read the full rules and any wipe notices.
Snapshot: the busiest PvE servers on BattleMetrics
Snapshot taken on October 31, 2026 at 13:57 to 13:58 UTC; populations change hourly.
The list comes from a BattleMetrics search for “pve” sorted by players. It shows the 11 most-populated ranked results whose names present PvE as the main mode. Map is the terrain each server reported to a direct Steam query or to the DZSA Launcher’s server lookup, and mod counts come from that lookup (14:01 to 14:12 UTC). The order follows player count at that moment and is not a recommendation.

All 11 ran game version 1.30.164200, every one was modded, and all of them loaded CF, a community framework mod. Seven of the search’s first 18 results were left out: six that BattleMetrics ranked NR, and the [CZ/SK] server Bolted.cz (91 of 100 at the time), whose name lists PvP alongside PvE. HORIZON stays in because its name describes a PvE server with PvP zones. The table stops at 44 players; the next two ranked PvE servers had 42 each.
Numbers move quickly, so treat the counts as one moment’s reading. Update 1.30 arrived on October 15, and several names point to fresh starts since then: both MAG servers advertise an October 15 wipe, CIDADELA’s name carries “WIPOU 17/10”, and Archon’s says WIPED.
How to choose a PvE server
- Check population at your hours. One reading is a sample. Open the server’s BattleMetrics page and look at the 24-hour and seven-day player charts, and give weight to its rank, which reflects a week of play time. The Max Distance filter gives a rough guide to ping, since BattleMetrics works out distance from the estimated locations of the server and the player.
- Count the mods before you commit. The 11 servers above needed between 14 and 71 mods each by the DZSA count, and a Workshop map adds more: the DeerIsle map’s Workshop page lists a file size of 11.794 GB. The two Nasdara servers list no map mod; Nasdara is Bohemia’s own terrain, added by the paid DayZ Badlands expansion on October 15, 2026. Bohemia’s Badlands launch post does not say whether joining a Nasdara server requires owning the expansion. Bohemia was explicit about the previous expansion: in 2024 it said only Frostline owners can join servers that run its Sakhal map.
- Know the wipe policy. Bohemia’s FAQ leaves stable-branch wipes to each server’s owner, while official servers get one when a big update calls for it. Bohemia ran a full wipe on every platform with update 1.30 on October 15, 2026, and it cleared its official servers when Frostline launched in 2024, advising community owners to follow. Community servers then set their own schedules, so check the description or Discord for the next date.
- Read the PvE rules closely. “PvE” can cover the whole map or leave room for PvP zones, and raiding rules vary; HORIZON’s DZSA listing, for example, adds “NO RAID”. Look for safe zones, trader areas and the penalty for rule breakers.
For survival crafting in a co-op setting outside DayZ, the open-world picks in games like Minecraft are another route.
Frequently asked questions
Are there official PvE servers in DayZ?
Bohemia’s official servers run the standard game, in which players can attack each other. PvE servers are community servers, and none of the PvE servers in the October 31, 2026 BattleMetrics snapshot was listed as official.
Do DayZ PvE servers wipe?
Yes. Bohemia’s FAQ puts stable-branch wipes in each server owner’s hands and ties them on official servers to major updates; update 1.30 reset all platforms on October 15, 2026. Community PvE servers set their own wipe schedules, and several in the October 31, 2026 snapshot advertised a recent wipe in their names.
Can you play PvE DayZ on console?
Only on community servers, and without zone mods. Console builds do not support mods, so PVEZ and similar tools are not available there, though Bohemia has added tools for console server owners, such as setting players’ starting gear through server-side mission files. Steam and console players do not share servers. The PC Game Pass edition is the Xbox build running on Windows, and it can join only “Keyboard & Mouse” servers, which Xbox console players can also join.
What is the DZSA Launcher?
The DZSA Launcher is an unofficial Windows launcher for DayZ that lists community servers and fixes missing Workshop mods through Steam. It has no affiliation with Bohemia Interactive, and the first six servers in its list are paid sponsorships.
What does NR mean on BattleMetrics?
NR is BattleMetrics’ warning label, and the site advises players to avoid any server that carries it. The label flags a server whose numbers BattleMetrics believes are fake, whether from bots or other padding. The default list hides such servers, but they can still turn up when you look up a keyword such as “pve”.
