Robert Jackson Bennett books fall into two phases: four standalone novels of horror, mystery and dark fantasy published from 2010 to 2013, then three fantasy series (The Divine Cities, The Founders and the Ana and Din Mysteries, which began as Shadow of the Leviathan), plus two standalone novellas in 2019 and 2020. Read each series in publication order, and start with The Tainted Cup for a fantasy murder mystery, Foundryside for a magic heist or City of Stairs for spy-driven political fantasy. As of October 2026, his newest novel is A Trade of Blood (August 2026), and Bennett has said a fourth Ana and Din novel is on the way.

Robert Jackson Bennett: where to start
Each series has its own world, so pick by genre:
- Mystery fans: The Tainted Cup (2024). Penguin Random House pitches it as a Holmes and Watson-style detective duo, and The New York Times Book Review likened it to Nero Wolfe “solving mysteries in Area X.” It won the 2025 Hugo and World Fantasy awards for Best Novel.
- Heist fantasy: Foundryside (2018). Brandon Sanderson’s blurb promises “heart-pounding heists,” and Sanderson fans will find his books in the Brandon Sanderson reading order.
- Political and spy fantasy: City of Stairs (2014). A spy posing as a junior diplomat investigates a murder in a city whose gods were killed. Bennett has said he set out to write a fantasy version of a John le Carré novel.
- Horror: American Elsewhere (2013). His second Shirley Jackson Award winner, covered in full below.
The standalone novels
Orbit published all four, and each stands alone, so read them in any order.
Mr. Shivers (2010)
His debut is set in the Depression-era Southwest. Marcus Connelly rides the rails west to hunt the scar-faced man who murdered his young daughter, and his quarry seems to be more than human. It won the Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novel, and it earned Bennett the British Fantasy Society’s Sydney J. Bounds Award for Best Newcomer.
The Company Man (2011)
In 1919, the McNaughton Corporation dominates American industry and has built the city of Evesden. When eleven union men are found butchered inside an underground trolley car, Cyril Hayes is caught between the company and the union. It won the Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original.
The Troupe (2012)
Sixteen-year-old pianist George Carole joins the vaudeville circuit to find the man he suspects is his father, Heironomo Silenus. Silenus’s troupe seems to change the world wherever it performs, and it is on the run.
American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett (2013)
Orbit published American Elsewhere on February 12, 2013. After her estranged father dies, ex-cop Mona Bright inherits a house in Wink, New Mexico, a tidy town that appears on no official map and sits under a pink moon. The house belonged to her long-dead mother, who may have worked at the nearby Coburn National Laboratory and Observatory, abandoned since the late 1970s. As Mona digs into her mother’s past, the people of Wink seem less and less ordinary.
It was his last standalone novel before he turned to series fantasy with City of Stairs. It won the 2013 Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novel, presented in July 2014. In the Los Angeles Times, Jeff VanderMeer wrote that it “conjures up echoes of the best works of Ray Bradbury and Stephen King” and noted that it stays ambiguous for a long time about whether it is supernatural fiction, science fiction or fantasy. Publishers Weekly gave it a starred review.
The Divine Cities trilogy reading order
The trilogy is complete. Each book follows a different lead, but later books build on earlier ones, so read in order.
- City of Stairs (2014): Shara Thivani, officially a junior diplomat from the nation that now rules Bulikov and secretly one of its best spies, hunts a murderer in a city whose gods were killed.
- City of Blades (2016): General Turyin Mulaghesh is sent to Voortyashtan, the ruined former stronghold of the god of war and death, to investigate a discovery that could change the world.
- City of Miracles (2017): Sigrud je Harkvaldsson sets out to avenge an old friend and is drawn into a secret war that has run for decades.
The Divine Cities was a Hugo Award finalist for Best Series in 2018.
The Founders trilogy reading order
Also complete: one story across three books, centered on Sancia Grado. Read in order.
- Foundryside (2018): Sancia, a thief, is sent to steal an artifact that could transform scriving, the art of coding commands into objects, and someone in the Merchant Houses that run Tevanne wants her dead.
- Shorefall (2020): As Sancia and her allies move against Tevanne’s rulers, they learn that Crasedes Magnus, the first of the legendary hierophants, is about to be reborn.
- Locklands (2022): The finale sends the group on its most daring heist against an enemy that uses scriving to control human minds.
The Founders Trilogy was a Hugo Award finalist for Best Series in 2023.
The Tainted Cup and the Ana and Din Mysteries (Shadow of the Leviathan)
Bennett has explained that the first book was originally titled The Shadow of the Leviathan; the old title lingered as the series name until the switch to the Ana and Din Mysteries, well after the second book. Penguin Random House now lists all three novels as the Ana and Din Mysteries. Each novel is a new case in a different corner of the Empire, but Bennett has a specific arc in mind for the characters, so read in publication order.
- The Tainted Cup (February 2024): In Daretana, a high imperial officer is found dead, apparently killed when a tree erupted from his body. Detective Ana Dolabra, rumored to wear a blindfold at all times, takes the case with her new assistant Dinios “Din” Kol, who has been magically altered in ways that make him an ideal aide.
- A Drop of Corruption (April 2025): A Treasury officer vanishes from a locked tower room in the canton of Yarrowdale, and the killer may be targeting the Shroud, where the Empire harvests magic from the blood of fallen titans.
- A Trade of Blood (August 4, 2026): The heir of a powerful family sits in jail accused of murder, and unless Ana proves his innocence, the farming canton of Sapirdad will erupt into war.
The Lion’s Tusk (July 2026) is a short Ana and Din story, released as part of the Magic & Mystery collection, in which Ana considers a centuries-old double murder at a noble wedding during a long carriage ride. It was released between A Drop of Corruption and A Trade of Blood.
What is next
As of October 2026, no title or release date has been announced for a fourth Ana and Din novel. In an August 4, 2026 Reddit AMA, Bennett said he was finishing the fourth installment and would likely have news soon. He added that he never planned to stop at three and that seven or eight “seems like a fun number.”
Novellas
- Vigilance (2019, Tor.com Publishing): Dark science fiction set in a 2030 United States, following the executive producer of a reality game show in which shooters are released into a “game environment” and survivors win cash.
- In the Shadows of Men (2020, Subterranean Press): Two brothers buy an old West Texas motel during a fracking boom and begin to suspect it was more than a motel in the days of the last oil boom.
