Weekly Roundup: October 6-12, 2019

The nights are getting longer; the days are getting cooler; the leaves are crisp and the air is crisper. Autumn continues its ascent as we creep further into October, and with the passage of time, another week’s come and gone. Let’s celebrate its passing with the latest Weekly Roundup!

Monday

We’ve got a dazzling duo of guests for this week’s My Favorite Things — Erin Michelle Sky and Steven Brown! We’re celebrating the release of The Navigator, the follow-up novel to their Peter Pan re-imagining, The Wendy, now available from Trash Dogs Media! What geeky loves can you expect to look forward to? How about the latest first-person shooter/RPG extravaganza, corrupt superheroes for hire, and the newest caped crusader to grace the CW! There’s lots to love in this week’s MFT, so take a look!

Tuesday

Merrin reviews one of Amazon’s newest forays into the fantastic: the Victorianesque murder-mystery/gaslit fairy fantasy, Carnival Row. Starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne as star-crossed human and fae lovers amid a melting pot of mythological creatures seeking refuge from their war-torn home, does this 8-episode series live up to its promising premise? Merrin’s got the answer here.

Wednesday

Calling all would-be dungeon masters!  If you’re wanting to dive into the world of tabletop RPGs, Andrea‘s got your back with some handy tips for running your own Dungeons and Dragons game. It’s solid advice for newbies and a great refresher for veterans alike — check it out!

Also for Wednesday, we’ve got a special guest author, Errick Nunnally! We’re celebrating the release of his newest novel, Lightning Wears a Red Cape, and inviting him to share with us the special things that influenced his work. That’s right, it’s another episode of You’re My Inspiration! So what went into the making of Nunnally’s superhero thrill ride?  It’s more than just pulp comics and costumes with capes — see for yourself here.

Thursday

Venessa takes you behind-the-scenes into the world of conventions — a safe and diverse place where fandoms assemble, and more than meets the eye! So much goes into planning a con, and Venessa’s got years of experience and expertise under her belt. In a special video for Speculative Chic, watch and learn about what goes into scheduling panels, choosing guests, and more! Doubling as a sneak peek into Multiverse Con, you don’t want to miss it!

Friday

For our October Roundtable, of course we’d keep it Halloween-themed! Our topic: My Favorite Monster! Join the gang at Speculative Chic as we discuss the monsters that make our heartbeats race out of fear (and love!). From vampires and werewolves to cenobites and gorgons, we’ve got creatures from mythology, pop culture, fiction, and film. There’s something for everyone in this monster mash!

The Kasturi/Files

Raise a glass as we toast the completion of another week of our special October column from guest authors Sandra Kasturi and Gemma Files. We’re talking daily takes on the best (or maybe just weirdest) cinematic horror out there, and paired them with book recs and custom cocktail recipes for your viewing pleasure! Here are this week’s episodes and yummy drinks:

You don’t want to miss this special column full of tricks and treats!

We’ve finished out the second week of October! I can’t believe how quickly the time is passing. Of course, they say that’s because we’re having fun, and I would agree — this month is proving to be super-exciting at Speculative Chic given all of the special guests and fun-filled columns we’re running. The spooky season plays a big part in this, to be sure. I hope you’re enjoying this busy month and that you’re having a blast! We’ll see you soon with our next recap of another fun-filled (and thoroughly packed!) week!
