Weekly Roundup: Super Mega Double Edition – March 11-15 AND 18-22, 2019

To quote the philosopher B. Spears: Oops. I did it again.

Real talk for just a minute: I get migraines. Sometimes they are bad. Occasionally they are wretched, and I deal with them for multiple days. This was the situation last weekend. The pain was so bad that I wasn’t even able to reach out to my excellent community of co-contributors to see if anyone could fill in for me. To pay for my absence, I’m going back two weeks. So buckle in and relax, because I’m performing a double set for you this Saturday!

Monday, March 11

Our guest for My Favorite things was poet, author, and high queen publisher of ChiZine Publications, Sandra Kasturi! “What does Sandra love when she’s not running a publishing house and writing award-winning stories? Spoiler alert: fairy tales translated to poetry, a Grand Master of science fiction that we lost too soon, adorable trolls, comfort reads, a movie so bad it’s good, and a galaxy far, far away. Intrigued? Read on to learn more!”

Tuesday, March 12

I’ve been watching Once Upon a Time, and all I could think of was how much I wanted to re-read Seanan McGuire’s own “fairy tales in reality” novel, Indexing. So I did.

On Tuesday afternoon, we shared our thoughts on Captain Marvel! Zero spoilers at this Sound Off!

Wednesday, March 13

Andrea Judy reviewed a new-to-her mobile game involving romance, magic, and tarot cards! Sold! Take a look at her review for The Arcana: A Mystic Romance and see if you’re joining me in this madness!

Thursday, March 14

We were delighted to welcome guest Bobby Nash, author of quite a few things, including several media tie-in novels! I’m a little envious of authors who get to write these, and there’s quite a bit more to it than I knew! Bobby shared his experience right here! It’s a great read!

Friday, March 15

Kelly McCarty reads a LOT. When you consume as many books as she does, you’re bound to come across something that doesn’t quite hit the mark for you, even though the book looks like it might be right up your alley. Such was the case for The Pisces: A Modern Merman Love Story.

Monday, March 18

Our guest for My Favorite Things was novelist David Demchuk! “What does David love when he’s not writing fiction meant to disturb you? Spoiler alert: today’s post could be subtitled ‘My Favorite Jumpscares.’ Everyone loves to be scared in a safe environment, right? Read on to learn more!”

Tuesday, March 19

Calie Voorhis returned us to the Map this month to discuss Carolyn Cherry! Perhaps you are thinking “…who?” right now. Perhaps you know her as C.J. Cherryh? There it is! By whatever name, Cherryh is a powerhouse of science fiction literature, and if you haven’t read her work, why not? Read Calie’s post and learn more about Cherryh and why you should give her fiction a look, if you haven’t already.

Wednesday, March 20

Erin S. Bales, that lucky thing, got an ARC of the newest novel in The Expanse saga! Whether you’re a fan or not, you should read her review, which contains minor spoilers only if you’re not caught up on the series. Friends, her review convinced me to pick up this series for the first time, and I am mostly a newbie, naught but a babe in the woods the stars when it comes to space opera. Don’t make the mistake that I did and wait.

Thursday, March 21

Nu Yang gave us a comparison between the use of time-loops in Russian Doll and Happy Death Day 2u for Thursday. Hint: one of these did very well indeed, while the other … did less well. But which one was it?

Friday, March 22

And finally, to finish out the week, Nicole Taft wrote about something that villains don’t usually do, and why it was an interesting choice. Why did Kylo Ren do that thing that he did in that film in which he did it? Yeah, I’m being obtuse. Read her post and find out what I’m talking about.

Book Club

I hope that you’ve acquired your copy of The Fox Woman! Remember that we’re going to be discussing this novel next Friday. We’d love to have you join us!

Phew. I’m know that I said this the last time, but I will do my best not to miss another roundup. In the meantime, my cherubs, go forth and enjoy your weekend! Even if you’re working, try to squeeze in some time for yourself. Whatever shape that takes, from enjoying time with your friends to reading quietly in your own company, do it. Life is short and the world is a trash fire, but there is still happiness to be found if you look for it.

Joy loves you and wants you to be happy. So do I. Inside Out (2015) © Disney
