My Favorite Things with Crymsyn Hart

They might not be raindrops on roses or whiskers on kittens, but that doesn’t mean that we love them any less. Welcome back to My Favorite Things, the weekly column where we grab someone in speculative circles to gab about the greatest in geek. This week, we sit down with Crymsyn Hart, whose Forest of Bones was released on August 7th from Mocha Memoirs Press!

What does Crymsyn love when she’s not writing about magic and demons and vampires (oh my!)? Spoiler alert: adorable collectibles, Gothic art, a head-trippy tv show, and stories of star-crossed lovers. Intrigued? Read on to learn more!

What are some of my favorite things besides long walks in the local cemetery or watching some horror flick? I have a few things I can think of that others might find odd. However, they fit the craziness of my life.

One of my favorite things I collect are skeleton figurines dressed up as animals, called Furrybones. Currently I have fifteen sitting on top of my bookcase. Eight years ago, I walked into a shop and saw them all lined up tempting me to buy one or all of them. I succumbed and walked out of the store with a skeleton dressed up as a butterfly. The one I adore the most is dressed up as a dog. I’m a dog person so it hits all the right spots. They come in different sizes dressed up in dragons to Dracula. If I’m not careful I’ll end up with more than I have space for. Sometimes I walk by them and see they’ve moved. My first thought always goes to something unseen messing with them. Then, I remember my house isn’t level. Every time the dogs run by the bookcase; the figurines jump around.

Adding to the theme of my favorite, creepy things, is one of my beloved artists, Joseph Vargo. I’ve been a fan for a long time. He captures what I love about the dark and makes it into something beautiful whether his artwork depicts vampires, gargoyles or evil jesters. The first piece of artwork I recall seeing was an angel sitting in the curve of the moon beckoning a dark angel to her. I have ten different pictures hanging on my walls. Good thing my husband is of a similar mindset and doesn’t mind the weirdness of how I decorate.

One of my all time favorite television shows is Fringe. It was such a shame it only ran for five seasons, but at least they gave it a proper send off. That can’t be said for all the shows I have fallen for over the years. Fringe has just the right about of horror and weird science mixed to keep me questioning what’s possible. I fell in love with the characters and the idea of the alternate universes interacting with one another. It was a great follow up to The X-Files without all the aliens. I’m more of a sucker for mysterious things that might be possible in the world. There is so much we don’t know yet or don’t understand and Fringe tried to make sense of some of that and what would happen if those two worlds collided. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched the series and found some part of a plot.

If I can’t find a show or movie to watch, I’m curled up with a good book. A novel I’ve read several times is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. The cover drew me to it. At the time I hadn’t seen many covers that were mostly black and white. It intrigued me. I bought the book and gave it a try. With magic, star-crossed love, and plot twists abound, this book has found a place in my heart. I’ve bought it for my family to read and even tried to strong arm my husband into reading it. However, he’s not much of a reader. With all the books I have on my shelves, this one is not going anywhere.

Those are the things that stand out to me. I am sure there are more that could end up on the list. Maybe next time there will be something even weirder.

Crymsyn, you had me at Fringe! My husband and I are rewatching the entire series right now, and I am so impressed how the writers knew from episode one what was going to happen in the end. Brilliant! Thanks for sharing your favorite things.
