Weekly Roundup: May 18-22, 2020

Another week has come and gone and we’re edging ever closer to June. Where did the time go? What is time? What is space? All the quantum foam’s gone to my head, it seems…Actually, they say during major catastrophic events (like a pandemic) one can easily lose their sense of time, so I’m sure I’m not alone in this. Is it Saturday? Is it Sunday? Is this real life, or is it just fantasy? 🎵 Anyway, with those rhetorical (or maybe not!) questions aside, let’s get started with the Weekly Roundup!

Monday

Our special guest for this week’s My Favorite Things is dynamic duo Clay Griffith and Susan Griffith, who write about vampires and historical fantasy and all manner of heroics within the DC Universe! So what can you expect from this week’s guests? How about urban fantasy flavored with Native American culture; your favorite robot pals Crow and Tom Servo; a quiet, romantic adventure series from a fantasy grand master; comics of the Silver Age; and a video game full of cowboys and crimson! Read on for more!

Tuesday

Calie guides us to our next stop in our survey of the genre, Changing the Map. This route leads us to the fantastic genre of sword and sorcery with the fabled world of Joiry from author C.L. Moore. Join us as we encounter a great heroine in Jirel, one of the first to defy genre expectations and ride the first wave of feminism in 1969 with her first book appearance, Jirel of Joiry. Intrigued? Grab your sword and join us here.

Wednesday

Erin‘s steady on with her Resolution Project to read James S.A. Corey’The Expanse series in its entirety. We’re up to the second book in the series, Caliban’s War, where “In the vast wilderness of space, James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante have been keeping the peace for the Outer Planets Alliance (OPA). When they agree to help a scientist search war-torn Ganymede for a missing child, the future of humanity rests on whether a single ship can prevent an alien invasion that may have already begun…” Ooh, sounds exciting! Fasten your seatbelts and jet off for more here.

Thursday

Nicole‘s knocking through the quirky-titled romantic fantasy series The Embraced from Kerrelyn Sparks. We’re on to the second book in this post, So I Married a Sorcerer, which centers on “Brigitta [who] knows nothing of her past, except that she is Embraced: born with powers that forced her into hiding. Everything changes when she learns she’s a princess, hidden away from her villainous half-brother who now rules the kingdom.” If that whets your whistle (along with a roguish pirate), by all means read on!

Friday

For Fiction Friday we’re excited to have Nancy O’Toole Meservier share an excerpt from her superhero fantasy Red and Black to honor the release of the latest installment that comes out on Memorial Day — Silver and Gold. What can you expect from Red and Black, the first in the series? Check out this enticing tidbit: “Dawn Takahashai knows all about superheroes. She’s been a fan of them for years. So when she’s granted an impressive powerset of her own, she dives right in, eager to prove herself as Bailey City’s first superhero: Miss Red and Black.” Don your cape and set off for more action here.

Speaking of space and time, there’s been a lot on my radar concerning alternate and multiple realities (a lot of this coming at me from doing my Voltron: Legendary Defender rewatch for Speculative Chic) but also, our gallows humor keeps calling this the “Darkest Timeline.” If there was a multiverse where every possible outcome exists in its own separate world, what do you think you would be doing right now, instead of waiting out this pandemic? Let me know in the comments, and stay tuned next week for another one of your favorite internet recaps.
