Weekly Roundup: December 23-27, 2019

Welcome back to the weekend, and congratulations on surviving the holidays! Sure, New Year’s is around the corner, but why worry about tomorrow when we can look to the past and see what amazing offerings Speculative Chic contributors gave us last week?

Monday

Mondays mean My Favorite Things, and for our last MFT column for the year, yours truly decided to share some current favorites. So what do I love when I’m not herding cats and keeping this blog running smoothly? Spoiler alert: the cutest kid ever, a divisive film in a popular franchise, a show that’ll fork with head and your heart, a drama that’s terrifyingly real, and a superhero show worth gushing about. Curious? Read more here.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, Ronya sat down and shared her favorite holiday-themed episodes in science fiction/fantasy television. And no, she’s not counting Doctor Who Christmas specials. Did your favorite make the cut? Check out her list and add your own in the comments!

Wednesday

Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, on Christmas Day, Speculative Chic took a bit of a break, but never fear: The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda hosted a Christmas party instead! What’s that you say? Pics or it didn’t happen? Very well, check out the photographic evidence here.

Thursday

For Boxing Day, Nancy joined us to provide her last regular column for Speculative Chic. Saying good-bye is hard, but we all wish her well on her future endeavors, and don’t worry: she’ll be back off and on. In the meantime, check out her review of G. Willow Wilson’s take on Wonder Woman, and if you’ve read The Just War, please share your own thoughts in the comments!

But wait, there’s more! On Thursday afternoon, a few of us gathered around for the annual airing of grievances, aka our biggest disappointments of 2019. What ticked us off this past year? Come take a look, and don’t forget to share your own!

Friday

Ah, TGIF. Michelle is back with part two of her amazing deep-dive into romantic vampire fiction, With This Ring, You’ll Be Dead: Violence Against Female Protagonists. What specific does she tackle for the month of December? Seduction. As always, we provide a gentle content warning due to violence, abuse, and potentially triggering subject matter, but this discussion is an important one to have, because art imitates life, and life imitates art. Check out Michelle’s commentary here.

Lastly, we closed Friday by chatting about what we’re looking forward to most in 2020. Hopefully, none of these future favorites will let us down! Come see what we’re looking forward to next year, and as always, don’t forget to share in the excitement: share your future favorites in the comments!

Book Club

YOU GUYS!!!! The Official Speculative Chic Book Club launches on Wednesday!!!! Can you believe it? For January, we’re reading Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone’s This is How You Lose the Time War, which is one of the most surreal time-traveling romances I’ve ever gotten my hands on. It’s a short book, but our January 31st discussion date will be here before you know it!

Been there, done that? Then get a head start on February and March. Kristina will host our discussion of Jeremy C. Shipp’s The Atrocities (currently $3.99 on Kindle!) on Friday, February 28th, and then Kendra will be squeeing over Cate Glass’ An Illusion of Thieves (which is on sale for $2.99! For a 334 page book, that’s a steal!) on Friday, March 28th.

So start reading, and get ready for some fantastic discussion! See you soon!

It’s hard to believe that this time next week, we’ll be looking out in the world with 2020 vision! New Year’s is a great time to stop, pause, and reflect on the year that’s ended, and then to look ahead with a resolution or a goal to shape the year to come! For my part, I’ve made a commitment to make more deliberate choices with my time and my energy, and to enjoy my time with family and friends. I hope you’re able to do the same!
