Weekly Roundup: September 16-20, 2019

Hello and welcome back to the Weekly Roundup! We’re coming to you a day late and a dollar short because I encountered a timeslip (or had a colossal brainfart…which is the more plausible? 🤔). How was your week? Did you keep to your worldline? Stay out of the wardrobe? Keep your hands and feet tucked in at all times? Good, we don’t want anyone getting lost…unless it’s in the worlds of fantasy, sci fi, and horror! We’ve got plenty samplings from these genres to choose from, so let’s get started!

Monday

Author Errick Nunnally is our guest from this week’s My Favorite Things, and we’re toasting his upcoming novel, Lightning Wears a Red Cape, available October 8th! This week’s post is all about superheroes, from an RPG-based alternate history to an ultimate vision of Marvel’s classics; from an apocalyptic parody to a grown-up toast of DC tropes, and other marvelous, diverse takes on a timleess genre, look no further. It’s time to suit up!

Tuesday

Calie continues her sprawling, epic journey through genre with another installment of her series, Changing the Map. Continuing her look at urban fantasy, our next stop is St. Louis with special guest Suzanne McLeod. With an exploration of paranormal romance, Anita Blake, time-travel, mystery, and all kinds of variants (and let’s not forget vampires!), this is one trip you’ll certainly want to take. Join us for more!

Wednesday

Erin follows up her first review of Blumhouse Production’s Hulu series Into the Dark with part two! With a spoiler-free look at episodes 7-12, what’s in store for viewers of this holiday-themed horror series? From the trickster month to family-themed, with some patriotic and back-to-school days thrown in the mix, how does this series pull off the theme in a unique and satisfying way? Find the answers here.

Thursday

Nu streams Netflix to review one of their newest series, Wu Assassins. A kung-fu blend of elemental science fiction and fantasy, dive into a series with an impressive and diverse cast, plenty of action, and the powerful bond of family. Does the storytelling and characterization hold up amid all the genre goodness? In a spoiler-free review, you’ll see if this show has some kick. Check it out!

Friday

Closing out the week, J.L. continues her 2019 Resolution Project: to read Ilona Andrews’s Kate Daniels series in its entirety. She’s made it up to volume 8 with Magic Shifts, where series lead Kate and her partner Curran are trying to deal with the pace of life, seemingly unrelated odd jobs for the Mercenary Guild, and battling a newly resurrected ancient evil. Is this long-running series still a fresh read? Some surprises are in store for you in J.L.’s review here!

I’m so grateful it’s a long weekend here. Monday is the Autumnal Equinox (Hooray, fall!!) which is celebrated as a national holiday, and then I have a compensatory holiday for working a bunkasai on the upcoming weekend, so it’s time to get caught up on my Netflix. Hmmmm…what should I be watching? Since I seem to be stuck “in another world, another time,” I’m going to cross the threshold into Thra and give the new Dark Crystal series a go. Mmmmm…time to make my move! See you next time!
