Weekly Roundup: June 3-7, 2019

Greetings, readers! Welcome to another week and (now another month!) at Speculative Chic. I hope things in your corner of the world are sunny, warm, and comfortable as the summer begins. In my neck of the woods, we have an extra season crammed inside summer called “tsuyu,” or, the rainy season, which has started early this year. Thank goodness I have a dehumidifer at home and plenty of geeky things to escape to! And in that spirit, let’s make our own getaway to the other worlds with this week’s roundup!

Monday

As always, we bring you the best thing about Mondays — MFT! This week A.M. Rose, author of the action-packed YA dystopian novel Breakout, joins us this week to share her top picks from the genre. From psychokinetic teens and loony witches to cosplay-worthy characters and animated shenanigans, you’re bound to find something to love from Rose’s loves. Check it out here.

Tuesday

Shara‘s got a review to sink your teeth into: the first season of What We Do in the Shadows, the FX TV series brought to you by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the stars and creators of the 2014 film. With the leap from the big to the small screen, how does this vampire horror-comedy hold up for American audiences? Shara gives the lowdown you’ve been looking for.

Wednesday

Wednesday offers a double whammy of reviews — first, our semi-regular column Sound Off! covers that big ol’ kaiju we all know and love, Godzilla! Erica and J.L. each have a go at the newest addition to the series, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Stop on by for a hot take that’s full of spoilerific fun.

And after that hearty dish, it’s time for dessert! Lane checks out Cherie Priest’s The Agony House, an illustrated (young) YA horror novel that makes your typical haunted house story look “fun as heck.” If you like art and books-within-books, read more about it here!

Thursday

MCU, we just can’t quit you! We’ve got another Avengers: Endgame post coming at you — and this time, Nicole is your guide to the quantum realms! In a very spoiler-heavy post, she covers time travel and all of its delicious possibilities, reminding us of some of the trope rules and offering up some fun theories on how to play with them. Read it here!

Friday

For her Resolution Project, Sherry is rewatching the Star Wars franchise in its entirety! She’s up to Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Join her for both a nostalgia trip and critical look at the second of the prequels. How does it function within the framework of the series? Does it stand the test of time? The answers you’re looking for are here.

We also announced the winner of the Book Club poll on Friday. Our next read will be V.E. Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic, which we plan to discuss in July. Get cracking, kids!

Book Club

Prepping for July’s read, there’s still time for the June Book Club reading! We’re working on David Mitchell’s The Bone Clocks for a discussion at the end of the month. Join us, won’t you? And if you like, you can help us out with our August Book Club pick by voting here.

That’s all from me this week! May you always have an umbrella when you need one; may the hot and humid air evade you; may the sun be bright but not burning; may your flowers bloom and never die; may you always have enough water to drink. That’s my wish for you for this summer! In the meantime, I’ll try my best to stay dry this month. See you next week!
