Weekly Roundup, February 4-8, 2019

Happy weekend! What was your week like? Mine started out normally, then quickly collapsed under the weight of my Thursday and Friday, but we’re not going to talk about those days. Instead, I’m going to focus on the things the good things in life right now. For me, right this second, that means coffee, my insanely spoiled dogs, and my current favorite music on loop. I’m settled in and ready for our weekly look back into time. Are you? Whenever you’re ready, dive in!

Monday

This week’s guest for My Favorite Things was author Rachael Robie! You may have spotted her debut novel, Sisters in Sorrow, after it was released last November. If not, we are pleased to bring her to your attention! “What does Rachael love when she’s not writing about telepaths with secrets? Spoiler alert: a nineties SF show that still holds up today, women who rise above the mire of abuse to take power, a certain bald elf, a YA trilogy that might’ve inspired Passengers but is way better, and our celestial red neighbor. Curious? Read on to learn more!”

Tuesday

Happy Women in Horror Month! We aren’t observing anything formally here at Spec Chic (maybe next year!) but I thought it would be appropriate to review a new-to-me horror novel by a new-to-me author. Take a look at my review for Gwendolyn Kiste’s The Rust Maidens here. No spoilers, so read freely! This was an excellent novel, and I hope that others will pick it up.

Wednesday

Lane Robins has decided upon a 2019 Resolution Project! This is a project with some history behind it, and Lane gives you plenty of background in her post. Check it out!

On Wednesday afternoon, Merrin announced our next book club pick and debuted the poll for the April’s book. More details here!

Thursday

Nicole Taft takes us back to the book store with some tips on how to help a bookseller help you. Hint: the fact that the cover is blue is not valuable information. We promise. Take a look!

Friday

Linden reading their story at the Odyssey Science Fiction and Fantasy Slam

We were pleased to welcome guest contributor Linden A. Lewis on Friday! Remember that we here at Speculative Chic are not only interested in talking about the latest and greatest in all things speculative fiction…we want to help YOU figure out how to make your own creator dreams come to fruition. Linden takes you through their process of transforming a short story into a novel that will be published next spring! Thanks again to Linden for sharing an inside look at the process! Read their post right here!

Book Club

I hope that you’re reading N.K. Jemisin’s How Long ‘Til Black Future Month so that you can join in our discussion later this month! And if you’ve read that already, hunt down a copy of Kij Johnson’s The Fox Woman for March! Hint: If you’re set on owning a copy of this book, you’ll need to go on the prowl, as the paperback and hardcover editions appear to be out of print. It IS available for most e-readers, and your library may be able to help you track down a copy to borrow, so it’s not unattainable! Go for it!

And that was our week! I hope that you find the time to do something that you love this weekend. What that looks like for you might be different from anyone else, but it doesn’t matter. Life is short and painful at times, so when you find something that makes you happy, revel in it! Me? I’m going to finish my current read (Ben Aaronovitch’s Broken Homes) and maybe slip out to see The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, because that brings me joy.

Let’s go back to Cloud Cuckoo Land.
