Weekly Roundup, January 21-25, 2019

Hello! I have returned from my adventures, I didn’t really find myself in need of a time travel device, and all went well last weekend! I know that you were all sitting at the edge of your seats just waiting to hear that. Anyway, you should all know the drill by now, so line up and then we shall proceed in an orderly fashion to the monorail for this week’s tour of the Week That Was.

Monday

This week’s guest for my favorite things was author Keith R.A. DeCandido! His favorite things? Well, it was a little different! “Spoiler alert: Keith’s essay is a love letter to his absolute favorite thing, and the inspiration behind all of his work. Intrigued? Read on to learn more!”

Tuesday

For this month’s Chain Reaction, Carey M. Ballard focused on stories that revolve around or include psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors. Psychology in general is fascinating to me, so I was especially interested in this topic. I hope that you enjoy it too! Check it out!

Wednesday

Kendra Merritt, having spent an entire year reading and reviewing some of the classics of sci-fi and fantasy, has returned to more recent fiction. This month she reviewed Air Awakens by Elise Kova. Kendra, having recently self-published a novel, decided that it would be worth her time to take a look at what some other self-published writers are releasing into the wild. What did she think of Air Awakens? Go read!

Thursday

Nancy O’Toole Meservier, that lucky lady, was fortunate enough to receive a new ARC from Serial Box in time for this month’s column. What is this ARC, you may be wondering? The first season of Ninth Step Station by Malka Older, Fran Wilde, Jacqueline Koyanagi, and Curtis C. Chen! She describes this novel as sci-fi police procedural. Intrigued? As was I! Read her spoiler-free review!

Friday

It’s book club time! Thanks as always to President Merrin for her hard work at keeping this train rolling. This month’s selection was Mystic and Rider by Sharon Shinn. I’m always the first to throw myself under the bus, so let me go ahead and confess: I didn’t acquire a copy of this until very late in the game — at the convention I just attended last weekend, actually — so I’m not quite done with the novel yet. I am, however, loving what I’ve read so far. I was delighted to learn that it’s a series. There’s nothing quite like discovering a new-to-you book, enjoying it, and learning that you can read several more volumes as soon as you can get your paws on them. We’d love for you to join in the fun, so please hop in with your comments right here!

Book Club

Next month’s book is How Long ‘Til Black Future Month by the incomparable N.K. Jemisin. I’m hoping to be able to participate in this one as well! I hope that you’ll join us, and as always, please spread the word! Bring your friends! Imagine, if you will, that we are serving excellent refreshments at this virtual book club. Everyone likes refreshments, right?

And now, I must leave you. As you read this, I’m working my tailfeather off at my day job. When I get home, I’m quite sure that I’ll be a worthless bag of nothing. So, please, have some extra fun this weekend for me. Know that I’ll be thinking of you and smiling, knowing that other people in the world are enjoying themselves. Ciao!
