Weekly Roundup, January 14-18, 2019

Hello from the past, future amazing readers! I am writing to you from several days before you’re going to be reading this because, as you read this, I am hanging out at MarsCon 2019 in beautiful Williamsburg, Virginia! I am quite sure that I’m having a ball! I hope that you, too, are having a great time with your weekend. You know the drill by now, and since we’re already playing with time travel, go ahead and step into this large, unobtrusive blue box. You know the one. It’s bigger on the inside.Monday

This week, My Favorite Things played host to author Brenda Drake, who had a brand new book released on Tuesday! Make sure to check out Analiese Rising when you get a chance. In the meantime, “What does Brenda love when she’s not writing about those who can raise the dead? Spoiler alert: making the world perfect, a hero that truly brings a family together, a mythological love story, a heroine she secretly wants to be, a familiar story from another point of view, and a television show that gives her chills. Intrigued? Read on to learn more!”

Tuesday

It’s the first of the year, which made me think of beginnings. This, in turn, led me to pose the following question to our contributors: what was the first piece of speculative media that began your long, strange, journey into the wide world of speculative fiction? This month’s roundtable did not disappoint! Take a look here to read about the first things that sparked our interest in this wonderful world of fiction!

Wednesday

I started reading Robin Hobb’s latest trilogy a few weeks ago and was struck by something strange: why is nobody talking about her work? Outside of her core fan base, I don’t ever see people discussing her novels. This is a shame, because she’s more than worth your time. If you like epic fantasy, you need to read Hobb. I lay out the reasons why right here.

Thursday

Nu Yang shared her thoughts on Jordan Peele’s upcoming film, Us, and discusses Peele’s growing influence and style within the horror film genre. Check it out!

Friday

Let it be known that Kelly McCarty is the first to complete a part of her 2019 Resolution Project! If you haven’t read Jacqueline Carey’s fiction, consider picking up Kushiel’s Dart and reading along with Kelly this year as she works her way through Carey’s Terre d’Ange novels. In the meantime, you can read Kelly’s spoiler-free review of Kushiel’s Dart right here.

And that’s it. It’s actually Tuesday for me right now, and I’m still not packed for my trip. Tune in next week to see if I forgot anything essential for my trip to Williamsburg! If only those handy time-travel devices were real. Because if so, then I could use the time-travel device to jump ahead and see what I forgot, or use it to go back and remind myself to…okay, I have to stop. I’m making my head hurt. Time is, if you watch The Good Place confusing.

Chidi points out what broke him and led to his existential crisis. That dot, right there. From The Good Place © NBC
