Victorian Faerie Fight Club: Sparrowhawk by Delilah S. Dawson

Series: Sparrowhawk

Why I Chose It: Delilah S. Dawson is one of my favorite authors. If she’s written it, it’s an auto-buy for me. However this would have been an auto-buy for me because of the premise of basically a Victorian faerie fight club. That caught my attention immediately and I was all on board this ride.

The premise:

Teen Victorian fairy fight club! As the illegitimate daughter of a Naval Captain, Artemesia has never fit in with her father’s family, nor the high class world to which they belong. However, when she is targeted by the Faerie Queen and pulled into another realm, she has no choice but to try and save the world that has always hated her. Writer Delilah S. Dawson (Hellboy: An Assortment of Horror, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny) and artist Matias Basla (The Claw and Fang) present a beautiful, gripping tale perfect for fans of Labyrinth and Princeless.

Discussion:

So the cover really caught my eye with the gorgeous girl with her fists bloody and ready to fight. The first few pages weren’t what I was expecting. We don’t start the story in a fight club or in faerie but at a funeral on Earth in Victorian times.

Artemesia is trying to find her place in a family that barely tolerates her when one of her sisters has died and now she will have to take her place in a marriage to a nearly 70-year-old duke.

As she’s debating her choices in front of a mirror, a horrible creature grabs her and pulls her into a strange world.

Waking up she finds herself in the world of faerie where it’s fight or die. She finds a strange creature that offers its help and tells her the rules of the land: for every creature she kills she’ll gain more powers. The only way to get back to her own world and save her world, she’ll have to fight her way through faerie.

As we end the first issue, Artemesia has finally made her first kill and her powers are just starting to grow.

In Conclusion: The art is gorgeous in this comic and I’m really excited about seeing what this series holds. Issues 2 and 3 are already out and the series is planned to last for 5 issues.
