Weekly Roundup, October 29-November 2, 2018

Hello! Happy weekend! It is I, your faithful tour guide. As always, I am delighted to lead you through a fascinating tour of all of the delightful exhibits that Speculative Chic created for you, our awesome readers, last week! Let’s go!

Monday

Author Lydia Kang joined us for this week’s edition of My Favorite Things. You know the drill! “Food glorious food! What does that mean and how does it relate to speculative fiction? Read on to learn more!” WARNING: have a snack close at hand before you start checking out this tasty article.

Tuesday

Kelly McCarty shared her thoughts on a nonfiction selection, A Season With the Witch for Halloween-Eve. If you’re interested in the city of Salem, MA and what they’ve been up to ever since the witch trials, go take a look at her review! (Spoilers!)

Wednesday

Happy Halloween! Bram Stoker Award winning poet Stephanie M. Wytovich shared her favorite vampire movies with us. If you’re not ready to let go of the spooky season (and I’m not), read her recommendations and schedule a movie night!

Cheers and congratulations to Nicole Taft for conquering the collected works of H.P. Lovecraft! The last entry in Our Daily Lovecraft appeared on Wednesday afternoon. See Nicole’s thoughts on Lovecraft’s work at the end of her final installment right here. And if you didn’t read the series, why not? Even if you’re not a fan of Lovecraft’s work, Nicole’s commentary is highly entertaining.

Thursday

Nicole managed to repair her brain enough to watch another film for this year’s Silver Screen Resolution project. The first selection for November was Conan the Barbarian. Have you watched the 2011 version? Either way, read Nicole’s review and have a chat with her. (Spoilers)

Friday

Sherry Peters is so close to finishing her Year of Thrones! This week she tackled season 6 of Game of Thrones. What did she think? See for yourself!

And finally, Merrin announced December’s Book Club selection and posted a poll for you to vote on what we’ll be reading in January. Go vote!

Book Club

You can still go chat with Merrin about, Laura Purcell’s The Silent Companions here! I will confess: I am a bad editor, and I’m still finishing the book, but I have THOUGHTS. Anyway. Are you reading Cinder by Marissa Meyer? You should! We’ll be discussing that later this month. Fun fact: this book has it’s origins in NaNoWriMo, which is why it was nominated for November. Speaking of…

NaNoWriMo

May the odds be ever in your favor, intrepid writers! I know that a few of us here are participating in the big, fun, novel-writing party this month. Are you? If this is your first time, here are some tips that Venessa Giunta shared.

That, my little monsters and cherubs, is that! I’m one of the gluttons for punishment who’s attempting to write 50,000 words this month, so my weekend is going to be spent trying to both catch up and get ahead. I actually socialized on Thursday, and I’ve had to be at the day-job all week, so my word count isn’t where I want it to be. Since I’ll be socializing again on Monday (probably), I need a nice cushion in place so that I don’t fall behind. If you’re participating and want to be writing buddies, find me at CaseyPrice (my user name is the most original, I know).

What’s on Monday? Spouse and I host a small, yearly viewing of V for Vendetta every November 5th (Guy Fawkes Day) because we are basic nerds. This year, the film feels eerily appropriate.

That feels bleak. Well. Eggy in a basket, anyone?
