Weekly Roundup, June 18-22, 2018

Hello and happy Saturday! May the joy of the weekend fill your soul with delight! (Or something like that.) It’s been a busy week for us, so let us dive right in!

Monday

Poet Claire C. Holland, the mad genius behind the horror poetry collection, I Am Not Your Final Girl, was our guest for My Favorite Things this week! What does she love? “Dirty computers, zombie comedy, Millennial nightmares, and a cute way to kill campers. Wait, what?” Folks, Holland really loves the horror genre, so go take a look at her post and find some deliciously creepy new things to consume (no pun intended) and enjoy!

Tuesday

Calie Voorhis wrote our first post of the day with a new installment of Changing the Map! This month she discussed one of her favorite mapmakers: Diana Wynne Jones. I will confess: I missed out on Jones while I was growing up and prowling the various libraries of my schools and hometowns. I feel the need to correct this after reading Calie’s post.

On Tuesday afternoon, a few of us talked about Incredibles 2 (no spoilers)! I have yet to see the film, because Real Life has demanded way too much of my attention lately, but I really, really want to. Edna Mode is, after all, my hero.

Wednesday

Erin S. Bales gave us an update on her late-to-the-game New Year’s Resolution: to read J.D. Robb’s entire In Death series before the end of 2018! Read her post to find out what made Rapture in Death stand out!

On Wednesday afternoon, a few of us got together to say goodbye to Sense8. It was a bittersweet event. Read our Sound Off! right here (no spoilers for the finale, but the post does assume that you’ve seen the series).

Thursday

Nu Yang was one of the many saddened by Margot Kidder’s recent passing. Nu wrote a lovely post on Kidder’s portrayal as Lois Lane, and what Kidder personally meant to her.

Nicole Taft continued her trip through Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy with her review of Authority. What did she think of the second installment of the trilogy? See for yourself! (some spoilers)

Friday

Time for the book club! I’ve been reminding you for weeks, and the time has come to discuss Diana Wynne Jones’ The Dark Lord of Derkholm! No, we did not plan for Calie’s Changing the Map to come about during the same week that we began our book club discussion; it was a happy accident! Have you read this novel? Go chat with Merrin!

Finally, Nicole finished out our week with her review of the final Southern Reach novel, Acceptance. Have you read this trilogy? If so, go read Nicole’s final review and discover her thoughts on the trilogy and whether she thinks it’s worth your time.

Book Club

Like I said, it’s time to talk dark lords! If you’ve been there and done that, go ahead and start reading The Power by Naomi Alderman for next month! And remember, you can still vote on our August novel right here.

What a great week! Fun fact: after revisiting Claire C. Holland’s MFT from Monday, I pulled up Janelle Monae’s Dirty Computer on Spotify and have been listening to it the entire time that I’ve been working on this week’s roundup. I’m so glad I did. You should give it a listen, too! It’s going to be part of my background soundtrack for this weekend as I participate in the #8intwo reading challenge (which I found out about on Instagram). What is this challenge? The goal is to read for eight hours over the course of the next two days. BRING IT ON. I need a mental vacation after the last few weeks, and I’m looking forward to disappearing into fiction for a few hours. Have a happy weekend!
