Weekly Roundup, June 11-15, 2018

Hello, happy people! We are HALFWAY finished with June, which means we are almost halfway through the year! How the time has flown. I can hardly believe that the week is over. Yes, friends, it is Saturday, and that means it’s time for our weekly cruise down memory lane. I hope that this week has been a great one for you. We had a pretty great one, ourselves! In the event that you missed something, fear not. I am, as always, your faithful tour guide. So, come along with me!

Monday

Author Christopher Golden was our guest for this week’s edition of My Favorite Things! I’m a fan of his work, and have been ever since he wrote some of my favorite Buffy the Vampire Slayer tie-in novels, so I was extremely jazzed to see that he had joined us! So, what are a few of his favorite things? Hints: “reality-shifting fiction, combating the apocalypse, girls stumbling through time, the “most compelling comic book of the decade,” television that’s so good it hurts to watch, and a worthy but flawed successor.” Go read his post!

Tuesday

Merrin whirled by on Tuesday to share a review of the Hugo-nominated novella Binti: Home by the incomparable Nnedi Okorafor! I haven’t read this series yet, but her review compels me to move it straight to the top of Mount TBR. Beware, the review assumes that one has read the first book in the trilogy, but there are no spoilers for this particular installment.

Wednesday

I am woefully uneducated in the world of comics and graphic novels, but I feel like I’ve found some pretty great offerings through my time here at Speculative Chic. Andrea Judy reviewed Through the Woods by Emily Carroll on Wednesday, and I’m going to have to pick this one up. It sounds excellent! Read her spoiler-free review for yourself, and see what you think.

Thursday

Venessa Giunta has started working her way through her own to-be-read stack this year, and she shared a review for one of her selections on Thursday. What book? Fledgling, by Octavia Butler! Have you read this one? It’s a pretty amazing novel, if I do say so myself. Take a look at her review! There are some character spoilers, so read with caution.

Friday

Nicole Taft rounded out the week with a review of the first of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy, Annihilation. Nicole was interested in reading the novel after she watched the film. Did you watch it? If so, did you read the book? Go check out Nicole’s review (no spoilers) and discuss!

Book Club

We are reading The Dark Lord of Derkholm by Diana Wynne Jones, but time is running short! Our discussion will be appearing any day now, so finish up soon! If you’re done, go on and dive into Naomi Alderman’s novel, The Power for next month. Don’t forget you can go vote for our August selection here.

So, we had a pretty great week! I’m spending my weekend at the day hobby (aka job), but I’m hoping to have a little time to unwind. I’ve been a bit of a rut lately, reading-wise, so maybe I’ll shake myself out of my funk and pick up one of the books we featured this week. Some books might cheer me up. Let us remember Hermione Granger: when in doubt, go to the library. Or to the book store, if the library closes early on the weekend.
