Weekly Roundup, May 28-June 1, 2018

Hi, I’m Kristina, a new contributor to Speculative Chic. Today’s Weekly Roundup is coming to you from Japan, where the Kyushu heat and humidity hath rendered me a beached whale, splayed beneath my apartment air conditioner. Maybe I’ll stay there until the rainy season passes. In the meantime, I hope your corner of the world is cool and comfortable!

Monday

Guest author Sara Wolf brightened our doorstep with her favorite things — a sweet confection of The Great British Baking Show tempered with the dark delights of Castlevania and Bloodborne. Add a side of N.K. Jemisin and Lorn and you’ve got a satisfying, well-balanced meal. Sample it here.

Tuesday

How about a double dose of awesome from J.L. Gribble? First off is our Sound Off of Solo, where she and Shara White discuss the newest addition to the Star Wars family. Is it a worthy contender for fandom love? Let’s find out!

Next, Gribble follows up her review of A Wrinkle in Time with A Wind in the Door, Madeleine L’Engle’s second entry in the Time Quintet. Gribble’s committed to seeing the series through, so read about the next part of her adventure here.

Wednesday

Kendra Merritt talks Ghost Talkers, Mary Robinette Kowal’s World War I novel that blends historical intrigue and paranormal fantasy through the adventures of the Spirit Corps, a group of mediums who communicate with recently deceased soldiers in battle. Read Kendra’s report from the trenches here.

Thursday

With a step to the left and a jump to the right, Nicole Taft warps to 1975’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show to experience this cult favorite for the first time. We know you’re shivering with antici… …pation, so get your fill here!

Friday

The Year of Thrones continues with George R.R. Martin’s Storm of Swords, the third book in A Song of Ice and Fire. Sherry Peters braves over 47 hours of audio goodness to share with you her thoughts on the ever-present TV-versus-book debate, as well as the pleasant surprises she encountered along the way.

Book Club

You have spoken! July’s Book Club pick is The Power by Naomi Alderman. There’s still plenty of time to crack open the book for our discussion on July 27.  You can also hop over here and vote for August’s Book Club pick! In honor of the back-to-school season, our theme is sci-fi and fantasy schools! There’s more to fantastical education than Hogwarts, so have a look!

Hope you enjoyed this week’s posts! In the meantime, I’ll stare lovingly at this promo art for Solo as I impatiently await its release in Japan (it hits theaters June 29 here).

Wow. Look at them guns! No, not those. I mean those.

See you next week!
