Weekly Roundup, April 30 – May 4, 2018

It’s the weekend! The weekend is awesome! Let’s hear it for the weekend! What are your plans? There’s a strawberry festival here in the Kingdom of Undisclosed Location, but the weather’s looking a little questionable, so we’re skipping it. Turns out that I’ve had strawberry shortcake before, and while it’s a delightful treat, it’s not worth potentially being caught in a thunder storm. So I’ll find something else to do.

But first! You know what time it is! Let me take you on a tour of the week that was. Buckle up, keep all appendages inside the vehicle, take as many pictures as you like, and be sure that you have plenty of cookies in case one of the writers approaches. They won’t bite — probably — (and Speculative Chic is not liable if they do bite, because I warned you to bring cookies).

Monday

Monday was a busy day for us. We kicked off the week with guest Erica L. Satifka’s ode to her favorite things! To quote the post, “What does [she] love when she’s not writing award-winning fiction? Spoiler alert: an electrifying revenge tale, “the inner-fantasy life of a somewhat terrible person,” global domination, a fresh take on an immortal character, and a stabby stress-reliever. Curious? Read on for more!”

On Monday afternoon, we announced the lucky winner of a copy of Spies, Lies, and Allies: A Love Story! …and never heard from the winner. So we drew a second name. Did you win? Go check. If you didn’t, you should still snag a copy of this novel, because a review is coming, and we’d love for you to join the conversation!

Tuesday

In what is probably my favorite post ever, I talked quite a bit about Labyrinth on Tuesday! I’m not even going to ask if you’ve seen this movie, because I don’t want to know if you haven’t. Just nod and agree with me that it’s awesome. Here’s a link. Go forth and enjoy!

On Tuesday afternoon, in place of a Sound Off! for Infinity War, film editor and Chief MCU Fangirl, J.L. Gribble announced that we’ll be holding off on our reactions until this coming Tuesday. She also invites you to visit this post to share your own Marvel “origin story.” Keep an eye out for our Sound Off! next week.

Wednesday

Lane Robins returned to her 2018 resolution with the latest in her podcast series, Listen Up! This month she tries out Steal the Stars. How did she do? See for yourself!

Thursday

Nicole Taft shared another review for her Silver Screen Resolution project with her thoughts on The Revenant. No, not that one. This one. I’ll confess that I was a bit confused when I noticed the review hanging out in the editing queue, but was pleasantly surprised. Take a look at Nicole’s thoughts on the film!

On Thursday afternoon, Kendra Merritt interviewed Lauren Baratz-Logsted. Our first interview! I’m so proud. Our little blog is growing up. *sniff* Ahem. Take a few moments to read the interview, while I drift away in a sea of sentimentality.

Friday

Sherry Peters has finished Season 3 of A Game of Thrones! Yay! She shared her reactions to the season right here! Beware of spoilers.

Finishing out the week, Merrin announced the book that we’ll be reading in June and posted the July poll. Check it out! Sounds fascinating! And there are some really great choices for July, so go vote.

Book Club

You can still dive into our Redshirts discussion here! We’d love to have you! Done with all of that? Read Barbara Hambly’s Dragonsbane for this month. The discussion will be here before you know it!

Free comic books!

Happy Free Comic Book Day! Consider giving your local comic book store some monetary love when you swing by to pick up the freebies. They can’t exist without money coming in, so snag something else while you’re there. If you need tips for something new to read, resident Comic Guru, Nancy O’Toole Meservier has written about several things that are more than worth your time. Or pick up a fun collectible or two! For example, I have a growing army of Funko Pop! minions, and I’m always on the lookout for new recruits. So, support your local stores, folks! They need it!

Whew. Big week for us! Time for some downtime. If you find anything particularly shiny in what I’ve shared with you, go forth and comment away! Comments are love! Comments are awesome! You’ll have to pardon me, I watched The Lego Movie last night, and That Song is stuck in my head.

You’re welcome.
