Hello friends and welcome to another announcement about book club. After popular vote, your choice for June’s book club is . . .

Author: Diana Wynne Jones
Discussion Date: 6/22/18

The Premise:

Mr. Chesney operates Pilgrim Parties, a tour group that takes paying participants into an outer realm where the inhabitants play frightening and foreboding roles. The time has come to end the staged madness . . . but can it really be stopped? Master storyteller Diana Wynne Jones serves up twists and turns, introduces Querida, Derk, Blade, and Shona and a remarkable cast of wizards, soldiers, kings, dragons, and griffins, and mixes in a lively dash of humor. With all the ingredients of high fantasy, this unforgettable novel will delight fans old and new.

So July is my birthday month. It is also the birthday month of several of my best friends. So the theme this month is “what do the July babies want to read?” As the only Leo of this bunch, I can only say, “You’re welcome.”

My friend Carolyn, born July 6, suggests The Grace of Kings. My favorite travel buddy Kelly, born July 10, heard about The Power from the librarian at her school and thinks it sounds awesome. Fellow Speculative Chic contributor Whitney Richter, born July 18, has already begun reading The Dispossessed, and suggests we join her. And coming in with an unprecedented fourth pick, I am offering The Tethered Mage as my pick for July. (My birthday is the 25th.)

What do you think we should read?

This is a tough pick! Erica Satifka recommended The Power in her MFT. I’ve read the Liu and Le Guin, and both are strong, important reads. I haven’t heard of The Tethered Mage, and that sounds fascinating.

Also, I absolutely ADORE the theme of “What do July Babies Want to Read?” This should always be your fallback if you’re lacking a theme (well, not JULY per se, but whatever month it’s for!). 🙂

I am currently reading The Tethered Mage and really enjoying it. Caruso’s got a really deft hand with her writing.
