Guest Post Options

7/2/1/2020: Important Announcement: we will no longer accept requests for guest posts after August 30, 2020. Thank you! –Management

At Speculative Chic, we’ve always celebrated our Favorite Things! Now, it’s time to expand our horizons a bit and offer guest writers other ways to share what they love and what inspires them, so if you’re someone who participates in the speculative fiction genre (fantasy, science fiction, horror, and any mix thereof), come check out our latest options!

Ready?

My Favorite Things: this is stuff you’ve read, watched, played, collected, attended, etc., in the past decade or so that you love. And what you love right now may or may not be related, at all, to your current release. The idea of MFT is that if you were to write one of these posts every couple of years, you’d likely be gushing about different things each time. I ask people to pick 3-6 different THINGS and of those 3-6, one can be non-speculative. A great example of how MFTs work and how they differ from year to year is from A.M. Rose: here’s her first one, and here’s her second. Another great example of a one-shot MFT is this one from Erin Roberts.

MFTs are published Monday mornings.

Blast From the Past: this is a kind of MFT but for when you were growing up, so basically, what did you fall in love with as a kid/teen/college kid that you still hold in high regard today? These items aren’t necessarily direct inspiration to your work. Example: Our Editor-in-Chic would absolutely squee about Jem and the Holograms, but she wouldn’t necessarily say it inspired her current work-in-progress about Appalachian ghosts. A great example of this type post (albeit under the MFT moniker… this is why we’ve come up with new categories!) would be from Troy Harkin, and our first official BFTP post features Donna Lynch.

BFTPs will be published on Friday mornings/afternoons

You’re My Inspiration: this is exactly what it sounds like, but instead of general inspiration for ALL of your work (though maybe it is!), these are the things that inspired the current release you’re promoting. Examples of this from the blog are from Claire Fitzpatrick and Stephanie M. Wytovitch. If you want to see what people were doing before we had the official column, check out (again, under the MFT moniker) would be from Richard A. Knaak and Keith R.A. DeCandido.

YMIs will be published on Wednesday afternoons.

How do publication and due dates work? We always try to give you a publication date close to your release date. With the exception of MFT (which fill up fast), we can shift the BFTP and YMI pub dates around. Example, Your My Inspiration could come out the Wednesday AFTER your book comes out, instead of the Wednesday before. MFT is a pretty tight schedule, so we’d rather not shift that around.
