Introducing the Speculative Chic Book Club!

I like reading books. I also like talking about books. I also like talking with people about books, not just at people. And because sometimes when you say you like things you get asked to implement them, I’m here to introduce the new Speculative Chic Book Club!

Here’s how it’s going to work:

On the fourth Friday of every month, I will post a short review of that month’s book selection, along with some discussion questions that the Speculative Chic crew will have discussed during the month. Readers and site visitors will then be invited to comment with their own observations or answers to the discussion questions.

For right now while we work out some kinks, we’ll select the book internally and post next month’s selection when we post the discussion post.

The first month’s selection is Down Among the Sticks and Bones, by Seanan McGuire. This is the sequel to Every Heart a Doorway, but both books are novellas, so if you haven’t read the first it shouldn’t be too much of a burden to catch up. (Our fearless editor-in-chic Shara would like to point out — because she’s already read the book — that it can stand alone, and reading the first isn’t necessary.) I promise I won’t make later books in a series a habit, unless they’re true standalones!

Next Book: Down Among the Sticks and Bones

Twin sisters Jack and Jill were seventeen when they found their way home and were packed off to Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children.

This is the story of what happened first…

Jacqueline was her mother’s perfect daughter—polite and quiet, always dressed as a princess. If her mother was sometimes a little strict, it’s because crafting the perfect daughter takes discipline.

Jillian was her father’s perfect daughter—adventurous, thrill-seeking, and a bit of a tom-boy. He really would have preferred a son, but you work with what you’ve got.

They were five when they learned that grown-ups can’t be trusted.

They were twelve when they walked down the impossible staircase and discovered that the pretense of love can never be enough to prepare you a life filled with magic in a land filled with mad scientists and death and choices.

Excellent. You can DEFINITELY read them out of order, IMHO.
