Weekly Roundup: May 28 – 31, 2019

Welcome back, friends, to your favorite internet recap ever: Speculative Chic’s Weekly Roundup. Thanks for playing along! I’m your host, Kristina, and this week we have a slew of goodies in store for you. Join us this week for the game where every post is a prize and every reader wins!

Monday

House of Mystery Cover ArtThis week’s MFT features Courtney Bates-Hardy in honor of her newest poetry collection, House of Mystery, brought to you by Kelp Queen Press.  Journeys through genre, fairy tale worlds, monsters of myth, fantastic retellings, dissected damsels, and more await you. Intrigued? Spin the wheel and claim your reward here.

Tuesday

Our next round includes the newest addition to the Translated SF Resolution Project. For this month’s entryRonya chose Karen Tidbeck’s dystopian novel Amatka, which was shortlisted for the Locus award.  To borrow some of the premise, “Amatka is a beguiling and wholly original novel about freedom, love, and artistic creation,” and Ronya’s take on it is just as beguiling. Make your wager on this post — no matter what, you’ll come out on top.

Wednesday

Ding ding! The sound of the bell can only mean one thing — it’s time for our special mini-game: Game of Thrones, that is! The moment you’ve all been waiting for is here — Sherry reviews the eighth and final season of HBO’s saga, which polarized fans and exploded the internet.  Sherry gives an awesome breakdown of each episode, with amusing commentary to boot. Of course, spoilers await you, but they won’t spoil the fun! Take the side-quest here.

Thursday

And now for a commercial break (blatant self-promotion): I wrote my very first con review for Speculative Chic featuring Tokyo’s premier event, Anime Japan! In March I grabbed another anime devotee, and we journeyed to Tokyo Big Sight, with our hearts set on cosplaying and basking in the glow of fandom. It turned out to be one of the most impressive and elaborate events I’ve been to and I hope you enjoy the stories and pictures! And if you want a preview of some the of newest anime coming out, take a look!

Friday

Congratulations, you’ve made it to the final stage of the game! Merrin leads this month’s Book Club discussion of Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold. May’s theme was Star Wars-esque space opera, and you, our lovely readers, chose our selection. Merrin gives the premise and her rundown of the story to jump-start the discussion. Add your take on the novel in the comments here!

Book Club

You’ve unlocked the bonus: after you’ve joined the discussion of Shards, take a moment to vote for July’s Book Club pick, and get cracking our June selection, The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell. If you’re a fan of parallel stories that span generations and continents (like Mitchell’s other work, Cloud Atlas), give The Bone Clocks a go!

Congratulations, readers, you made it through another round of Roundup and endured another post theme I’ve thoroughly run into the ground. What bizarre concept will I choose for our next episode? Outer space? Under the sea? Or will I run out of ideas and make a standard post that’s fun and…normal? Stay tuned next time, and thanks for joining us this week at Speculative Chic!

At least I didn’t make you play Garfle Warfle Snick.
