To the Avengers We Lost

THIS POST CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

When Avengers: Infinity War ended, we lost half of the world’s population. But by the time Avengers: Endgame arrived, we were reunited with them. Unfortunately, we also lost some of the original Avengers along the way. So, here are my thank you letters to Tony Stark aka Ironman, Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, and Steve Rogers aka Captain America. Without you three, we wouldn’t have the Avengers.

Dear Tony:

When I first met you in 2008, I was an instant fan. Not only because one of my favorite actors was bringing you to the big screen (Robert Downey Jr.) but because you were everything I loved about a character. You were a snarky bad boy, but a snarky bad boy with a heart (well, sort of). I mean, if Pepper Potts could love you, I could too!

You were the anchor of the Avengers. It’s why Nick Fury looked to you to help recruit members into the initiative. Despite being a “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist,” you showed that there was more to you. It’s why you selfishly flew a nuclear weapon into space, and in the end, it’s why you sacrificed yourself to defeat Thanos.

I’m glad you got your five years of happiness with Pepper and your daughter, Morgan. You were freaking living in a cabin in the woods! Gone were the days of Stark Tower and seeing your name in lights. Your family came first now (both Pepper and Morgan and the Avengers Initiative).

You get to rest now, and you leave behind a long legacy for many more superheroes to come. There will never be another Tony Stark.

Love you 3000,

Nu

Dear Natasha:

I was prepared to lose either Tony or Steve, but not you! If Tony was the anchor of the Avengers, you were the glue. Even though you were a spy with no allegiance, you were one of the most loyal characters in the franchise.

You didn’t have a suit or a shield or superpowers, but you were still skilled (I mean, look at how you got Loki to confess his plan in the first Avengers movie). Your relationship with Clint was one of my favorites, so I understand why you chose to be the one to go over that cliff. You had red on your ledger, and you wanted to wipe it out. But was there really no other way?? Honestly, you deserved better, girl.

But I loved that you were the one holding down the fort in Endgame. You finally chose a side — and that was with your Avengers family.

Whatever it takes,

Nu

Dear Steve:

Oh, my heart. My heart still hurts for everything you went through, yet what made you special (your hopefulness and optimism) still remained intact. You were the first Avenger, so it made sense that you would be the last one standing against Thanos and his army.

I admit, I was drawn more the bad boys at first (Tony and Loki), but you won me over as my favorite Avenger. You always did the right thing, even when that right thing came with shades of gray (hello, Bucky). You never gave up on anyone (hi again, Bucky), and underneath those muscles and shield, you were still that scrawny kid from Brooklyn who just wanted to fight for others.

When all is said and done, I’m happy you got to live a full life (thanks to time travel). You’ve passed on the shield, but you will always be my Captain America.

Thank you for America’s ass,

Nu
