Our very own Tez Miller popped by to share her favorite reads from last year! Tez is a dedicated book lover and when we asked her for her most favorite things, she was happy to share a list of the books that she’s read and loved. What are those books? Hint! “A planet at war, futuristic Brazil, deadly viruses, life on the moon, and edge-of-your-seat thrillers.” You can count on Tez to tell it like it is, so if you’re looking for something new to read (and aren’t all of us, really?), take a peek at her post!
Monday afternoon is when our little site leveled up a bit! To quote the post itself: “I’m sure you’re used to the My Favorite Things column we publish every Monday morning, but we got to thinking: why not invite authors to share excerpts from their latest releases? On Tuesday morning, Andrea Judy treated us to a look at some of her favorite mobile games! I can’t speak for one of her selections, but the other…let us just say that I, too, have been crushed to death by a mob of adoring citizens. Tuesday afternoon’s post was a Sound Off! for The Cloverfield Paradox. Never, ever underestimate J.L. Gribble‘s dedication to watching MOST of the things, because she bravely watched this film so that you don’t have to. Only Editor-in-Chic Shara White joined her this time around. Ah, love. Love was in the air this Valentine’s Day, as Chief Saltminer and Book Club High Overlady, Merrin, decided to pour a little sugar out for once. She shared a fantastic list of her favorite speculative romance tales. We did a Roundtable last year sharing some of our favorites as a group, but Merrin has an entirely different list that’s chock full of all kinds of love stories. Take a look at this list. It’s awesome.

In addition to being the month for love and smush, February is also a celebration of Women in Horror! Were you aware that such a thing existed? If not, you know now, and still have about two weeks left to revel in this delightful event! Nu Yang celebrated with a post dedicated to her favorite Final Girls. This is an amazing post celebrating some truly badass women, so read the whole thing!
Friday
Lane Robins shared our only book review for the entire week on Friday morning. This time around, Lane reviewed Christopher Rice’s Bone Music. Yes, Anne Rice’s son is also an author, and from what Lane had to say about his latest release, a pretty damned good one. Read her review here, but be wary of spoilers.
Book Club
Hard to believe it, but the month is over halfway gone. Our discussion of Nalo Hopkinson’s Brown Girl in the Ring is going to be live any day now. Are you ready? Fantastic! In March we’re taking at trip to Ireland and reading Daggerspell by Katharine Kerr. We’d love for you to join us. You can vote for our April selection here! Merrin decided that some humor was in order, so we’re choosing between How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu, To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis, and Redshirts by John Scalzi. One book is dramatically outperforming the other in the poll, but I’m not telling you which one. Go make yourself heard!
