Weekly Roundup, September 10-14, 2018

Hello friends! It’s a rainy day here in the Kingdom of Undisclosed Location, but not quite as rainy as we were thinking it was going to be, so I’m thankful for that. Anyway, it’s Saturday and I’m talking at you, so you know what that means. It’s that time again, where we slip back into time to revisit the week that was here at Speculative Chic. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Monday

We began our week with a visit from author DL Wainwright, who stopped by to talk about the things he loves best when he’s not hard at work on his next book. I bet that you’d like to know all about those things (you should). Here’s a hint: “a video game that knows just how to create claustrophobic horror, a Disney cartoon that’s a lot creepier than you’d think, and an extension of crafting. Intrigued? Read on to learn more!”

On Monday afternoon, Merrin announced our October book club pick: Laura Purcell’s The Silent Companion! Visit this link to vote on what we’re going to read in November.

Tuesday

Nu Yang is pretty stoked that Jamie Lee Curtis and Linda Hamilton are both getting back to the franchises that helped make them famous (Halloween and Terminator, respectively). I’m excited too! Anyway, Nu wants to know if these two events are going to usher in a new type of action hero: tough, badass older ladies! Read Nu’s post and join us in hoping that this becomes a trend!

Wednesday

Merrin returned on Wednesday with the latest in her series of reviews of N.K. Jemisin’s work! This month, she’s taking a look at a myriad of Jemisin’s standalone short fiction. Read her post, and BONUS! She’s included convenient links so that you can read the stories yourself.

Thursday

Lane Robins, a big Sherlock Holmes fan, read and reviewed a new novel in the Holmesian tradition: A Study in Honor. I won’t say more, just read her review and, if you’ve read it, see if you agree with her assessment. There are spoilers, but they are clearly marked, so that you may read her review without fear of having the ending ruined for you.

Friday

A few of us got together to talk about our favorite musical moments in speculative media! This roundtable was particularly difficult for me, so I talked about three of my favorites. Go read, and then tell us about your own favorites in the comments! You know how much we love to chat!

Book Club

We’re going to be discussing Peter S. Beagle’s classic The Last Unicorn any day now, so I hope you’re reading! Spread the word! We’d love to have more people join us in our discussions!

It was a nice week! I hope that you found something new to read or watch here today. It’s the middle of September, which means that it’s officially time to start getting excited about Halloween! I’m in the mood for all things spooky. I’ve been making my way through the Nightmare on Elm Street collection with my husband. Maybe we’ll dive into the Halloween series next. After all, we wouldn’t want to be caught unaware when the new sequel arrives next month, would we?
