Happy weekend! Have you recovered from the week yet? No? That’s okay! It was a long week for me, too. We are entitled to a little rest and relaxation. Take all the time that you need. Grab a drink, settle down, and let’s look at what the awesome writers here at Speculative Chic did last week!
Monday
Our guest for My Favorite Things this week was author Matt Betts! You have to check out his books; I downloaded samples and added at least three to my TBR list. Anyway, what does he love when he’s not hard at work on his next book? “Skeptics and believers, a water tower of blood, a t-shirt for every day of the year, poking fun at bad movies, and five minute games.” Wait, a water tower of…okay! Read his post and find out if that’s a real water tower filled with actual blood! (It’s not. Probably.)
Tuesday
Merrin wrote up a review of Vox Machina Origins, a comic about the cast of Geek and Sundry’s Critical Role. Okay, I described that badly. It’s about the characters that the cast play in their regular RPG sessions. To quote the post: “I enjoyed seeing these characters as they’re meant to be (a gnome and a goliath and not, you know, two humans talking like a gnome and a goliath).” Make sense now? Either way, it sounds like a lot of fun. Read Merrin’s post (no spoilers) and see if you agree!
On Tuesday afternoon, our Sound Off! for Ant-Man and the Wasp debuted! Have you seen the film yet? Based on our writers’ reactions, you probably should. No spoilers here, so read without fear!
Wednesday
We began Wednesday with a review from Andrea Judy! Andrea is just starting to explore the world of audiobooks. For her introduction into this experience, she chose a recording of Neil Gaiman’s “Shoggoth’s Old Peculiar” from Smoke and Mirrors. If you like Gaiman, and you haven’t heard him narrating his own fiction, you ought to give this a try for yourself! See what Andrea thought! (No spoilers.)
On Wednesday afternoon, Merrin returned to announce our next book club pick: Among Others by Jo Walton! I’ve heard nothing but excellent things about this book, and I might even get to participate in the discussion next month, as I already own a copy! Join us! Go vote for September’s selection, too.
Thursday
Are you a convention-goer? Do you want to be? Venessa Giunta has some great advice on doing conventions on a budget, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out. I’m in the latter camp here, and I got a ton of great information from this post. Check it out!
Friday
What is a “guilty pleasure” exactly? Rather than debate the meaning here, I’m simply going to point you to this month’s roundtable: Our Guilty Pleasures. Go read, and then share with the class: what’s YOUR guilty pleasure?
Book Club
We’ll be discussing Naomi Alderman’s The Power any day now! If you’re interested in joining the discussion, you still have time! And, don’t forget to visit the above link to vote for what we’ll be reading in September.
And that, as they say, is that. Find anything that strikes your fancy? Remember that we love to chat, so feel free to chime in on any of our offerings from this week! Enjoy the rest of your weekend, whether you’re adventuring out somewhere in the real world, or just through one of the endless fictional realms! I’ll be back next week, and we’ll do the Time Warp again!
