Weekly Roundup: August 12-16, 2019

You know what they say…. time flies when you’re having fun, or when you’re so busy you forget what day of the week it is and you promised one of your contributors you’d take over the weekly roundup! Never fear! Your Editor-in-Chic shook herself off from dreaming about the weekend to make sure you had everything you need to stay caught up at Speculative Chic! What discoveries might you get your hands on to make your weekend better? Let’s take a look:

Monday

As always, we like to get our week started off right by asking someone to share their favorite things, and this week, we brought our very own Merrin to share her favorites. What does she love when she’s scouring the internet for books to read? Spoiler alert: text-based games with lots of twists and turns, hilarious D&D podcasts, meeting her heroes, and a television adaptation that actually lives up to the source material. Interested? Read on to learn more!

Tuesday

We had so much fun reading Merrin’s favorites that we asked her to do double-duty and write another post this week! She decided to talk about the latest series from one of her favorite authors, but it’s on Audible only. Wait, what? That’s right, Sharon Shinn’s Uncommon Echoes series can only be listened to, not read, and Merrin’s giving us the scoop. Was this series about people who have exact replicas of themselves who follow their move worth paying for that Audible subscription? Come find out!

Wednesday

Andrea is a big fan of Dungeons and Dragons, but even she recognizes the game can be a little bit intimidating to newcomers. So she’s compiled a list of her top three one-shot games to dip your toe in and get started! Take a look!

Thursday

Some people are thrilled with all of the live-action Disney movies coming out, and some people feel it’s too much, too soon. Whatever your thoughts, Nu joined us on Thursday to share something that Disney is doing absolutely right, and why it’s important to her. I don’t want to spoil the fun: let Nu tell you why it’s a good thing that Disney gets “woke.”

Friday

Last but not least, on Friday J.L. brings us yet another review for her Kate Daniels re-read. Let me tell you folks, she is rocking her Resolution Project! Come check out J.L.’s review of Magic Breaks here!

Book Club

August will be over before you know it, so don’t miss out on our last book club selection for the year! We’re revamping the project, so definitely stay tuned in the coming weeks for details. In the meantime, have you read Lev Grossman’s The Magicians yet? Don’t miss out! Read it now, and join us on Friday, August 30th to tell us your thoughts!

There you have it: all kinds of suggestions to make a great weekend even better! What tickles your fancy? Are you going to curl up with a good book to listen to? Binge the remaining chapters of The Magicians? Or are you going to take Andrea’s advice and start a new campaign? Whatever you do, be sure to have fun, and celebrate all of your successes!
