Sparrowhawk #2 (2018)
Written by: Delilah S. Dawson
Genre: Fantasy
Series: Sparrowhawk
Publisher: Boom Studios
Why I Chose It: I really, really loved the first issue of this comic series and was thrilled to continue the adventure with Art in the world of Faerie.
The premise:
Teen Victorian fairy fight club! As the illegitimate daughter of a Naval Captain, Artemesia has never fit in with her father’s family, nor the high class world to which they belong. However, when she is targeted by the Faerie Queen and pulled into another realm, she has no choice but to try and save the world that has always hated her. Writer Delilah S. Dawson (Hellboy: An Assortment of Horror, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny) and artist Matias Basla (The Claw and Fang) present a beautiful, gripping tale perfect for fans of Labyrinth and Princeless.

Discussion:
We dive into the second issue of this comic book series exactly where we left off. Artemesia (Art) and her bonded ally Crispin are making their way through the strange land of the faeries as they flee the Wild Hunt. The Wild Hunt is made up of more unseelie faeries on the hunt for Art.
Crispin advises Art on the nature of this world: kill to get stronger or be killed. Crispin helps keep Art safe and from the Hunt but clearly has his own agenda. I can’t wait to see and learn more about her strange companion.
As they flee further into the strange world, they encounter a pacifist Unseelie named Warren. Warren is the disowned son of the Unseelie queen and he has specifically chosen to walk a path of peace. Warren gives an interesting voice for Art to listen to as Crispin encourages her to kill, Warren tries to find a path forward without violence.
After killing more creatures attacking the innocent, Art hits the process called molting. She falls into a deep sleep and awakens with new skin, armor and much larger wings. She won’t have time to adjust to these changes as book 2 ends with a new enemy appearing ready for a fight.
In Conclusion: I’m still immensely enjoying this series. Comic issues are quick, fun reads and the art is incredible. Book 3 and book 4 are available now, if you’re interested in diving in!
