Weekly Roundup, December 31, 2018 – January 4, 2019

Happy weekend, friends! It’s that time of year when everything still seems bright, new, and hopeful! I hope that your weekend reflects this in some way. We’ve hit the ground running here at Speculative Chic, and we don’t intend to slow down. Let’s see what our writers created for your reading enjoyment this week!

Monday

To start off New Year’s Eve, several intrepid souls shared their 2019 Resolution Project goals. Books and games seem as if they’re going to rule the year, but you never know when somebody might decide to jump in with their own plan for the year. (I know, but I’m also an editor, which comes with a few perks.) Take a peek! You might find something that will inspire you to take up a project of your own, or even a project to follow along with.

And on Monday afternoon, I published the final Weekly Roundup of 2018. What can I say, I wanted to sum up a bit of the year in addition to last week. I’m sentimental. Here it is, if you missed it.

Tuesday

Since this was meant to be a low-key kind of day, we published our Sound Off! for Aquaman, to give our readers an idea of what they might be getting if they chose to spend their day at the theater. Final verdict? Go read and see for yourself!

Wednesday

Returning to our regularly scheduled programming, Lane Robins published her final Listen Up! column, listing and briefly discussing some of the podcasts that she sampled but didn’t end up pursuing further due to one reason or another. Some of them weren’t up her alley, but they might be for you. Check it out and maybe you’ll see something that sparks your interest.

Thursday

Nicole Taft published a new installment of Welcome to the Bookstore! This time she tackles a question that many bookstore customers often have: why a certain book may or may not be in stock. Timely, if you have gift cards burning a hole in your pocket. Read up on the subject, and make your next trip to the bookstore easier and more enjoyable before you even step through the door!

Friday

As far as I can see, there are two things that people spent a lot of time talking about in the last week or two: Birdbox and Black Mirror‘s “Bandersnatch.” Erin S. Bales watched the latter and reviewed it right here. Read on with no fear of spoilers.

On Friday afternoon, Merrin announced our next book club selection! I’m hoping to pick this one up and join in on the fun. If you follow along during the week, you already know what we’re reading next, but for those who don’t, I won’t spoil it. Just go here to see for yourself, and make sure you vote in the poll!

Book Club

We’re reading Sharon Shinn’s Mystic and Rider this month, and we really hope that you’ll join us! Resolve to read more in 2019! Resolve to make new friends! You can do BOTH if you play along with the Book Club!

We’re off to a great start! I hope that, if you’ve made a resolution of your own, that you are following suit. It’s going to be a good year. It’s going to be a good weekend, too. I am embarking upon the Quest To Bring Home Furniture in a little while. My old couch, which was old before I acquired it, has departed this realm for the Eternal Living Room and its replacement is patiently waiting to be picked up and installed. Before I do that, I have to do battle with the dust monsters that had colonized the Kingdom of Undercouch. Too bad they don’t resemble the dust mites from the Miyazaki films:

Aren’t they cute? Perhaps we will break in the new couch by watching My Neighbor Totoro after we complete our quest. It might inspire any lingering dust monsters to become friendly, cheerful members of the household. Enjoy your weekend!
