Weekly Roundup, August 13-17, 2018

Hello all, and happy weekend! As always, I hope that you’ve had a marvelous week, or, at the very least, a not-so-bad week. It’s a gloomy, overcast day here in the Kingdom of Undisclosed location, but that doesn’t mean that I get to partake in my own rainy-weekend ritual of snuggling up with a nice book. No, I will be celebrating the marriage of two dear friends this evening, and then going to a concert tomorrow. Then it’s back to the day job on Monday. And so, let us begin our whirlwind tour of the week that was!

Monday

Author Linnea Hartsuyker joined us on Monday to chat about her current crop of favorite things. Some of her favorite things are on my own personal roster of That Which I Love, so I was delighted by her list. Maybe you will be, too! “Spoiler alert: a comic that barely resembles the television show that adapts it, books that are old friends, a different kind of workplace comedy, and a television show that you should absolutely not spoil for yourself.” Check it out right here.

On Monday afternoon, we were thrilled to announce that our very own Nancy O’Toole Meservier has released her latest novel into the wild! Go read about that novel, Red and Black here. Congratulations, Nancy!

Tuesday

Merrin appeared on Tuesday with the first of two posts this week. She received an ARC of Linnea Hartsuyker’s newest novel, The Sea Queen. Lucky Merrin! If you, like me, are fascinated by historical fantasy and Vikings, you’re in luck! The book came out this week, so you can dive into this series right away. Read the first book, well, first. And make sure to check out Merrin’s review! No spoilers here, but this review does assume familiarity with the previous novel.

Wednesday

Erin S. Bales played through Quantic Dreams’ Detroit: Become Human, and it sounds like a great game. Curious about it? Take a peek at Erin’s (mostly spoiler-free) review and see what you might be getting yourself into! I can’t play most video games, but if I could, I’d snag this for myself.

Thursday

There’s going to be a new series set within the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe. Have you heard about this? What are your thoughts on the television revival of this series? Nu Yang wondered how they might bring the series forward into today’s world. Read her thoughts here.

Friday

In case you hadn’t heard, WorldCon is happening this weekend in San Jose, CA! I wish I could be there! Among many other activities happening there, the Hugo Awards will be announced tomorrow. Merrin returned for her second post of the week with her breakdown of the short story category. Read her post and decide who you’re rooting for.

Book Club

Our discussion of Jo Walton’s Among Others is coming soon! You still have time to check out the book, and please do! We’d love you to join our discussion. Finished with it and ready for the next one? We’re going to read The Last Unicorn in September. BONUS! You still have time to vote for which spine-tingling scary story we’ll devour in October! Do that right here! Your choices are: The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell, Shutter by Courtney Alameda, and My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due.

That’s it, we’re back! I hope you enjoyed this week’s romp through the halls of Speculative Chic. Take a little time to relax and look back at what our fabulous contributors assembled for your reading pleasure. Feel free to chat with us — we love comments! Now, I’m off for my own fun-filled weekend. First, the wedding. Weddings can be so much fun, when you’re on the other side of the ceremony. Cake, dancing, tipsy people giving heartfelt toasts…I love every one of those things. Tomorrow, I’ll be indulging in a different kind of Cake. That’s all I’ve got for you, folks. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
