Weekly Roundup, November 19-23, 2018

Hello all, and happy weekend! For those of you who have to work today, my sympathies are with you. Remember to take some time for yourself, if you can. How was your week? It’s a holiday weekend here in the US, and a lot of us are in the midst of planning for the next big holiday and finding creative ways to finish off leftovers from Thursday. Fried mac and cheese, anyone? In any case, here’s what our fantastic contributors published for you, our delightful readers, this week. Let’s go!

Monday

Our guest for My Favorite Things this week was…our very own Kendra Merritt! Did you know that she has a book coming out? By Wingéd Chair is available on November 26th! While you’re waiting to read Kendra’s new novel, peruse her latest list of favorites. “Spoiler alert: an immersive MMORPG, creating good endings, bringing characters to action-figure life, and a classic author who never fails to deliver. Intrigued? Read on to learn more!”

Tuesday

Calie Voorhis returned this week with the latest installment of Changing the Map. This month’s topic? The “father” of science fiction, H.G. Wells and his efforts at including feminist ideals in his fiction. Papa tried. Bless his heart.

On Tuesday afternoon, J.L. Gribble gave her (non-spoilery) thoughts on Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in our latest Sound Off! Did you watch this yet? What is your opinion on the film?

Wednesday

Erin S. Bales is getting chilly (as are a lot of us), what with winter breathing down her neck. Her antidote? A series of series to immerse yourself in during the frosty weather. Go check it out!

Thursday

We’ve been (mostly) nice this year, haven’t we? Check out our holiday wishlists to see what a few of us wouldn’t mind receiving this holiday season. There are some great ideas for gifts for the more nerdly inclined folks in your life, so if you’re stuck for ideas, take a look!

Friday

Guest Lucy A. Snyder joined us on Friday to share some tips for the fiction writers among us. Desription and setting are vital parts of well-written fiction, and Lucy is here to help you write your best work!

Book Club

We’ll be discussing Cinder next week! I hope you’re ready! Finished with it? Great! Try out The Sunlight Pilgrims by Jenni Fagan for December. And make sure that you’ve voted for our January selection!

And with that, friends, we are finished for the week. Any big plans for the weekend? I’m hoping to take in a showing of Ralph Breaks the Internet, as I love Wreck-it Ralph so very much. If you’re not planning to venture out, and you haven’t watched this particular movie yet, I heartily endorse it. It’s bright, colorful, and features sentient candies and cookies, which might make movie snacking a little awkward.

I guess there’s always popcorn.

If you could eat those delightful, cheering cookies and not feel a twinge of guilt, then we are very different people. Wreck-it Ralph, © Walt Disney. Image from animationscreencaps.com
