Weekly Roundup, January 1-5, 2018

It’s the first weekend of the new year, and I hope the first week of 2018 treated you kindly. Here at Speculative Chic, we wanted to start the new year off with a bang, so let’s take a look at all of the awesome content this week, and see what you might’ve missed!

Monday

We decided to start the new year right by sharing our very own resolutions. And not just any resolutions…. speculative resolutions. What are our contributors promising to do for 2018 (and therefore share with you, lovely reader)? Check out our 2018 Resolution Project to find out!

Tuesday

We had not just one, but two book reviews for your enjoyment! First up, Casey powered through the plague to bring you a review of Paul Krueger’s Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge, a fun urban fantasy that uses mixology as magic, and I have to say, I’m tempted to read this one for the recipes alone!

Next, Merrin continued her Star Wars reading with Claudia Gray’s Leia, Princess of Alderaan. I’ve read this one too, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. Want to see what Leia and Alderaan were like before the Death Star destroyed everything? This is one Star Wars novel you won’t want to miss, and I’m pretty sure Merrin agrees with me!

Wednesday

Lane started the day with the final installment of her Silver Screen Resolution. What was the final movie? Why, Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, of course! So how did this particular mash-up fare under Lane’s critical gaze? Come find out!

Then Kendra wrapped up the day with her review of Rat Queens: Volume 1: Sass and Sorcery. She’s not normally a graphic-novel or comic reader, so she’s definitely got a fresh perspective of what works and what confused her. Come see what she thought, and feel free to share other graphic novel/comic recommendations in the comments!

Thursday

On Thursday, our resident bookseller tackled a troubling topic: what does one do with all those unwanted books? While Nicole‘s post immediately made me think there should be a book orphanage somewhere, she actually gives great advice for what to do when you receive a book as a gift that you either already have or has somehow missed the mark. If the advice doesn’t help you right this minute, it can help you in the future, so check it out!

Now you may not have realized this, but the Golden Globes are tomorrow! Anyone who’s a movie or television junkie is bound to have a great time watching all the celebrities dressed to the nines and celebrating the nominees (and it’s fun to see who wins, right?). However, it’s not all unicorns and rainbows, as our newest contributor RJ Joseph brings up an important topic: Get Out does not belong in the comedy category. See why this is more than just ridiculous marketing, and spread the word!

Friday

Friday kicks off the 2018 Resolution Project for our resident writing coach Sherry Peters, who’s resolved to make 2018 The Year of Thrones! Having never read the first book or seen the first season of the show, she’s alternating between both each month. So this week, she told us all about her thoughts of the first season of the show, Game of Thrones. Want to experience Martin’s saga for the first time, all over again? Come join Sherry’s discussion!

Last but certainly not least, Merrin announced February’s book club selection and put up the poll for March. Wanna get a head start? Click over here to so you know what book to reserve at the library, and make your voice heard for March!

Book Club

Speaking of the book club, January is here, so I really hope you’re reading Octavia E. Butler’s Dawn. The whole trilogy is amazing, and I’m jealous of anyone who gets to experience it for the first time. If you’ve never read Butler, now’s the time to fix it. You can find Dawn on its own or as the first installment in the omnibus Lilith’s Brood!

Also, have you shared your thoughts on December’s selection, Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather? The holidays may be over, but some things are timeless. Whether you read the book for the club or it’s an old favorite, please come join us in the comments, and share other Pratchett recommendations to those for whom Hogfather was their first!

So the first week of the year was over, and whew, it was a busy one for us at Speculative Chic! We hope you enjoyed all we had to offer, and that you’ll continue to join us in the weeks ahead. My Favorite Things returns on Monday, and as always, we’ve got lots of great stuff for you to drool over.

In the meantime, enjoy your weekend, and if you’re suffering from this “bomb cyclone” that’s murdering the East Coast, stay safe, stay warm, and please, try and stay well. After all, winter isn’t coming, winter is HERE.
