My Favorite Things: Star Wars, Teaser Trailers, and Ancillary Justice get “Lost in Space”

They might not be rainbows on roses or whiskers on kittens, but that doesn’t mean that we love them any less. Welcome to My Favorite Things, a weekly column where we gush about what’s currently causing us the most geeky glee. This week’s post includes a gorgeous edition of an exciting science fiction book, a movie trailer that hits all of the right nostalgic notes, a top-notch speculative episode of an animated comedy, and apparel that defines geek chic.

Shara’s Favorite thing is…. Her Universe’s The Force Awakens Clothing
Line at Hot Topic!

HerUniverseJacketYes, I admit it. I caved. I found myself in a Hot Topic and could not resist the lure of Her Universe’s new line of clothing inspired by The Force Awakens. Yes, I caved and bought the Kylo Ren dress. Yes, I caved and bought the Captain Phasma jacket. Who knew evil looked so good? Now if only we could skip summer so I can rock the jacket in the fall and wear my dress for a Christmas Party or two, I’ll be set!

Janicu’s Favorite Thing is… Subterranean Press’s signed limited editions of the Imperial Radch Trilogy
Ancillary_Justice_by_Ann_Leckie
I am currently loving my copies of the Subterranean Press signed limited editions of Ancillary Justice and Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie (Ancillary Mercy is on pre-order). The artwork by Lauren Saint-Onge is amazing. I adore her interpretation of the characters. I already really liked the series, but the original covers didn’t spark the reaction these did in me, which was “THESE SHALL BE MINE!!”, despite the $50 price tag per book (it’s $250 for the lettered edition). I’m not sorry, only grateful for having a job. Sadly Ancillary Justice is already sold out, but you can buy art prints of these covers from the artist’s site.

Betsy’s Favorite Thing is… the teaser trailer for Beauty and the Beast!

13559159_1296213850397502_4083227045942331991_oI debated about whether this was “speculative” enough, but it’s a fairy tale so I’m going with it. I can’t properly express how happy it made me to see the first trailer for the live-action version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. I’m sure I’ll talk more about it later, since it’s one of my very favorite stories, and I have a daughter who’s almost old enough to watch it and talk about it. For now, I’ll just say that given how happy I was with their adaptation of Cinderella last year, my expectations for Beauty and the Beast have only risen based on the footage we see in the trailer. The castle! That front door! The ballroom floor! The chandeliers! That music! Ugh, I’m about to swoon, and I haven’t even seen two minutes of it.

Tez’s Favorite Thing is…. American Dad!: Season 9: Episode 18 – “Lost in Space”lostinspace What some would take a full-length film or novel to do, American Dad! introduces the world of an alien spaceship in just 22 minutes. Abducted by aliens, human Jeff Fischer finds himself working as a slave on a spaceship owned by Roger Smith’s race. The only way he can return to Earth is to prove that his love for Hayley is real. But is it? And does love exist at all? It’s a great episode, and now I know want to download “Majestic” – Wax Fang’s song that plays during a key scene.

Disney’s been really on point with their advertising for their live action fairy tails. I remember the Cinderella posters being just as gorgeous

I remember being rather unimpressed with just the glass slipper, though I do agree: the posters let you know, even without the movie title, exactly which fairy tale they’re talking about!
